Intra-Hospital Principles of Decontamination and Reprocessing of Medical Devices and Instruments in Central Sterile Services Department to Overcome Pandemic COVID-19 in Taiwan

Background:
COVID-19 is a severe acute respiratory infection, which has rapidly spread across the world since 2019; the virus has linked to contaminated environmental surfaces including medical devices and surgical instruments in health-care settings. Cleaning, disinfectant and sterile processing have always had a uniquely essential role in the hospital, especially when the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic containing the spread of harmful pathogens, helping to control the spread. Hospital has to assembled mobile medical devices and instruments to CSSD after use from patients, to ensure assemble in a flawless environment, follow cleaning and disinfectant protocols to cleanse the equipment, this would ultimate an effective cleaning system with all quality practice to prevent from contaminations. Implement effective intra-hospital preventive principles to protect CSSD workers’ physically and psychologically well-beings to overcome pandemic Covid-19 are crucial.
Purpose:
The purpose of this study is to provide guidance and standard operating procedures on the cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of medical devices, surgical instruments and environmental surfaces in CSSD with the context of COVID-19.
Current Situation:
Principles, technologies and tools of cleaning and disinfection practices for mobile medical devices, surgical instruments and environmental surfaces in CSSD for COVID-19.
Intervention:
1. Established Policies of COVID-19 in CSSD
2. Monitor Temperate and URI Symptoms Every Shift
3. Routine Environment Cleaning in CSSD
4. Updated Information & Training
5. Cleanse & Disinfected Medical Devices as CSSD Protocols
6. Disinfect with Ultraviolet Light in Soiled Zone & Medical Devices for Terminal Cleaning in CSSD
7. Visitor Screening as CSSD Policies
8. Replace Medical Devices Maintenance Card to Automatic Management Tracking System
9. Shower after working in soiled zone
Conclusion:
Hospital and department leadership is vital to minimize and reduce the exposure risk, to ensure CSSD workers are aware with the latest information and
updates. Regular monitoring a training are essential to maintain staff competencies and improve compliance to the hospital protocols. During the process, to prevent the chaos, a special in-charge team will be contactable 24-7 for further assistance of unforeseen circumstances and clarification of the protocols.
