Implementation of Information System Interface in a Medical System to Enhance the Efficiency of Infection Control Nurse in Communicable Disease Reporting Operations

Research Purpose:
In the current communicable disease reporting operations, clinical physicians, clinical laboratory test results, death diagnosis reports, and disease classification codes may all fall into the infection control system as potentially reportable cases. When performing the role of an infection control nurse, it is necessary to verify the above data. However, each piece of data requires opening different information interfaces to retrieve patient-related information and enter relevant data into the additional information field of the reporting form. Therefore, by integrating relevant commonly used query interfaces into the same operating system, it can effectively enhance the efficiency of infection control nurses in the communicable disease reporting process, reducing unnecessary manual work.
Research Methods:
Conduct a statistical data survey on the top five reported diseases in 2022, ranked in order as follows: tuberculosis (982 cases), syphilis (497 cases), gonorrhea (317 cases), Leptospira (200 cases), and scrub typhus (177 cases).
Investigate the HIS (Hospital Information System) operating systems used by infection control nurses for the top five reported diseases. The systems include:
Emergency Department Medical Records (36 times)
Laboratory Reports (35 times)
Medical Record Summary (27 times)
Imaging Reports (21 times)
Nursing Records (15 times)
Current Medications (12 times)
Admission/Discharge (8 times)
TPR (Temperature, Pulse, Respiration) (1 time)
For the top reported disease, tuberculosis (a total of 982 cases), activities such as reviewing emergency department medical records, laboratory reports, imaging reports, medical record summaries, nursing records, and current medication status analysis are required for each report. The time spent on each operating system varies from 1 to 3 minutes. Assuming a maximum time of 3 minutes, with 6 systems to review, it would take 18 minutes per case. With 982 cases reported in 2022, the total time required would be 17,676 minutes (294.6 hours).
By implementing a system with linked buttons for the above eight operating systems, the working hours of infection control nurses during the retrieval process can be simplified. This allows nurses to click on a case on the same interface to perform the required operational queries, reducing retrieval and window switching waiting times.
Research Results:
After implementing the system, taking tuberculosis as an example requiring activities in 6 operating systems, the query time can be reduced to within 1 minute to open all 6 operating systems. The original 18-minute time spent on querying one reported case information has decreased to 1 minute, a significant 94% reduction in working hours, enhancing the efficiency of infection control nurses.
Research Conclusion:
In infection control operations, many tasks require analysis and retrieval by infection control nurses. Especially in the statutory communicable disease reporting operations, some diseases require providing relevant data content on the reporting screen. While disease reporting is the responsibility of clinical physicians, maintaining the integrity of reporting data is the responsibility of infection control nurses. Therefore, through information optimization, the retrieval and switch waiting times of infection control nurses can be improved. This is particularly important in urgent reporting cases where external connection times may be extended due to bandwidth issues. Thus, the introduction of a frequently used information link panel can effectively enhance the efficiency of reporting operations.
